Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson exited Thursday's loss to the San Jose Sharks in the third period with an apparent leg injury.
Head coach Craig Berube said after the game that Ekman-Larsson will need to be evaluated before a full timeline on his injury can be determined.
Ekman-Larsson was attempting to corral a loose puck along the board when Sharks centre Adam Gaudette fell on him along the boards, causing the blue-liner's left ankle to bend at an awkward angle.
He was assisted off the ice by teammates after the incident. The 34-year-old had played just under 14 minutes of ice time and registered a single shot on goal before leaving the ice.
Ekman-Larsson has four goals and 16 assists this season, and his 20 points are second amongst Maple Leafs defencemen to Morgan Rielly's 22.
In the meantime, Berube announced after the game that Brandon Carlo had surgery on a lower-body injury that has kept him out of the lineup for the entire month of December. Carlo had surgery while the Maple Leafs were on their most recent road trip and his timeline to return is one month.
