The goaltending woes just continue for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Starting goaltender Anthony Stolarz was ruled out for the remainder of Tuesday's game against the Boston Bruins and replaced by Dennis Hildeby, who came out to start the second period.
Stolarz allowed three goals on 10 shots in the first period, and the 31-year-old was not on Toronto's bench to start the second. The Maple Leafs later announced he had been ruled out with an upper-body injury, along with captain Auston Matthews.
This marked the third straight game that Hildeby appeared in for the Maple Leafs after he subbed in on Saturday night against the Bruins for a struggling Stolarz, who allowed two goals on four shots and four goals on 19 shots. Hildeby then started between the pipes on Sunday against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Hildeby allowed a goal on the first shot he faced in the second period, a David Pastrnak snipe less than a minute in that stood as his 400th career marker.
After the game, which the Maple Leafs lost 5-3, head coach Craig Berube told the media that Stolarz’s injury isn’t believed to be serious and that he tweaked something in his upper body. Meanwhile, Berube said that Matthews would need further evaluation.
After a career year in the 2024-25 season, Stolarz has struggled and has a .889 save percentage and 3.35 goals-against average. Notably, his numbers since publicly calling out his teammates one month ago have been subpar, with a .874 save percentage and a 4.05 goals-against average that is worst in the league among goalies that have faced more than 200 shots, per Sportsnet Stats.
Stolarz signed a four-year, $15 million contract extension with the Maple Leafs on Sept. 29.
