The Toronto Maple Leafs have released forward Nikita Gusev from his pro tryout contract and assigned four more players to the AHL's Toronto Marlies.

Gusev joined Toronto after spending the 2020-21 season with the New Jersey Devils and Florida Panthers. The Maple Leafs were hoping the Russian forward could regain his form from the 2019-20 season when he put up 44 points in 66 games for New Jersey.

The 29-year-old was a sought after free agent out of the KHL, where he had 332 points in 391 career games. The winger also helped the Olympic Athletes from Russia capture the gold medal at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.

Joining the AHL Marlies are Leafs draft picks Semyon Der-Arguchintsev, Mac Hollowell along with Kristians Rubins and Erik Källgren.
