The Toronto Maple Leafs sent defenceman Max Lajoie back to the Marlies of the American Hockey League on Sunday.
The 26-year-old from Quebec City played 20:29 in a 9-2 win over Anaheim on Feb. 17, before skating in a pair of games during the team's recent Western road swing. He has one assist in seven games so far this season with the Leafs.
Lajoie's demotion creates room for veteran rearguard Mark Giordano, who has been away on bereavement leave, to rejoin the team. Lajoie was with the Leafs on an emergency loan.
More roster decisions are pending for the Leafs, what with forward Calle Järnkrok (fractured knuckle) and goalie Joseph Woll (ankle) both expected to come off Long Term Injured Reserve at some point this week.
The Maple Leafs do not play again until Tuesday, when they host the Golden Knights.
