The Toronto Maple Leafs were busy on the blue line on Saturday.
Along with trading veteran Brandon Carlo to the St. Louis Blues, the Leafs opened the second day of the NHL Draft by selecting two defencemen with intriguing resumes.
Toronto used the 60th-overall pick in the second round to take Kitchener Rangers blue-liner Alexander Bilecki.
The Mississauga, Ont., native helped the Rangers win an OHL title and the Memorial Cup in his second major-junior season. The six-foot-one Bilecki had nine goals and 20 assists in 66 regular-season games before adding two goals and nine assists in 18 OHL playoff games for an older Rangers team.
In the third round (69th overall), the Leafs selected Edmonton Oil Kings star Ethan MacKenzie, who finally was taken in his third year of eligibility.
MacKenzie had a breakout season, earning a spot on the Canadian world junior team. He had 22 goals and 36 assists for 58 points in 59 WHL regular-season games.
MacKenzie is slated to play NCAA hockey at powerhouse North Dakota next season.
