As the Toronto Maple Leafs prepare for the 2026-27 regular season, the team visited with Matthew Mayich's family in Arizona.
Mayich is a 21-year-old defenceman and St. Louis Blues prospect who joined the Sun Devils for the upcoming season after playing four seasons with the OHL's Ottawa 67's and one at Clarkson University.
The Stoney Creek, Ont., product collapsed during an outdoor workout with the ASU hockey team on Aug. 20 and has been hospitalized ever since.
Toronto is currently in Arizona to take advantage of the five off-days between its final pre-season contests and its season opener on Tuesday at home against the Montreal Canadiens. The Maple Leafs skated at ASU's Mullett Arena on Saturday and, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, players wore T-shirts and hats in Mayich's honour at the rink ahead of the practice.
The hats feature Mayich's "MM" initials and his No. 27, while the shirts have a photo of Mayich and his number.
Mayich was drafted by St. Louis in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft, but has yet to sign his entry-level contract.
In 34 games with Clarkson in 2025-26, the left-shot blue-liner had seven goals and eight assists.
