As the game wound down, with the Vegas Golden Knights about to defeat the New Jersey Devils 5-3 on Thursday night, chaos ensued at the Prudential Center.
With 15 seconds left in the third period, Devils defenceman Mason Geertsen went after Golden Knights blueliner Alex Pietrangelo. Afterwards, a scrum ensued between the two teams.
Golden Knights goalie Robin Lehner took off his helmet and gloves, shoving Devils centre Michael McLeod.
Lehner, Pietrangelo, and Geertsen were assessed misconduct penalties and ejected from the game. Golden Knights forward Jonathan Marchessault was not happy after the game.
“I think it’s kind of gutless,” Marchessault said of Geertsen’s actions.
Devils head coach Lindy Ruff explained that he wanted to frustrate the Golden Knights, sticking up for his player.
“He didn’t do anything but finish a check,” Ruff said.
The Golden Knights and Devils next meet on Apr. 18 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
