A clutch night from Mitch Marner deserves a little extra celebration.
The Toronto Maple Leafs star forward etched his name in franchise lore on Thursday against the New Jersey Devils, becoming the fastest player in team history to reach 700 career points after doing so in 622 games.
Club legend Darryl Sittler formerly held the top spot, reaching the 700-point plateau in 666 games.
Marner tallied his prized assist when the team needed it most, giving linemate Auston Matthews a clever little dump-off in space along the boards to let him rattle off a game-tying goal with less than five minutes to go in regulation.
The 27-year-old one-upped himself in overtime, picking up his 701st point on a cross-ice outlet pass to William Nylander on the break to set up the game-winning goal.
Marner has enjoyed one of his most productive years in a Maple Leafs uniform, with 14 goals and 48 assists for 62 points through 46 games.
His career-high in points came in the 2022-23 season when he had 30 goals and 69 assists for 99 points in 80 games, which he is on pace to surpass.
The Markham, Ont. native was selected fourth overall by the Leafs in the 2015 draft and debuted with the team in the 2016-17 season. Since then, he has yet to finish with fewer than 61 points in a season and has reached the 90-point mark three times in his nine-year career.
