Auston Matthews just keeps making Toronto Maple Leafs history.
On Sunday, he surpassed Maple Leaf great Darryl Sittler as the franchise’s lone second-leading goal-scorer with his 390th career tally.
Matthews surpassed Sittler with a goal in the second period against the Pittsburgh Penguins, achieving the feat in 237 fewer games than the Hall of Famer.
"It's nice to be in the same sentence as a guy like Darryl Sittler," Matthews said post-game. "Obviously a great Leaf. [He] paved the way for some of us now here today.
"So it's a big honour to be in the same sentence."
The current Maple Leafs captain now sits behind Mats Sundin for the franchise-leading goal-scoring title. Sundin had 420 goals in 981 games with the Maple Leafs. At 27 years old, Matthews sits just 30 goals away.
