After a game that saw more than 300 penalty minutes, it was a virtual guarantee that some additional off-ice punishments would be handed down.
Four Tampa Bay Lightning players are set to face some consequences after a hectic Saturday pre-season showdown against the Florida Panthers, the NHL's department of player safety announced Sunday.
Centres Carter Schmidt and Gage Goncalves were both fined for cross-checks on Carter Verhaeghe and Evan Rodrigues, respectively.
Schmidt was fined $2,098.52, while Goncalves was hit with a $3,125 fine, both of which were the maximum allowable under the collective bargaining agreement.
Meanwhile, right-winger Scott Sabourin will have a hearing for roughing Aaron Ekblad, and defenceman J.J. Moser will have one for boarding Jesper Boqvist.
Hearings for both will take place on Monday, per the NHL DoPS. Suspensions could be on the table for both players.
Sabourin's incident happened only minutes into the game, with the Lightning enforcer going for a blindside hit on Ekblad, then throwing punches at the Panthers defenceman. Ekblad went back to the team's locker room after the play and did not return.
Moser, meanwhile, put Boqvist into the boards head-first at the 14-minute mark in the first and was immediately ejected. The Panthers centre was not injured on the play.
All four players were handed game misconduct penalties and were part of the 16 players removed from Saturday's chaotic exhibition game. No punishments have yet been announced for Panthers players.
