NEW YORK — Alexis Lafreniere scored twice and Dylan Garand made 25 saves as the New York Rangers beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-1 on Tuesday night for their fifth straight home win.
Will Cuylle and Mika Zibanejad also scored for the Rangers, who snapped Tampa Bay’s four-game winning streak. The Lightning hadn’t lost since falling to the Rangers 5-1 in New York’s home opener on Oct. 1.
Lafreniere scored 62 seconds into the game, beating Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy from in close.
The 25-year-old Lafreniere, the first pick in the 2020 NHL draft, scored again at 12:47 of the first, his team-leading seventh goal.
Ty Kartye assisted on both of Lafreniere's goals. Kartye also scored twice in New York’s previous game, a 6-2 home win over Vancouver.
Tampa Bay’s Zemgus Girgensons narrowed the deficit to 2-1 with his first goal of the season late in the first.
Cuylle made it 3-1 late in the second, redirecting a shot by Sean Durzi from the point past Vasilevskiy for his third goal.
Zibanejad had an empty-netter at 17:16 of the third.
Lafreniere, who had a hat trick in a 5-2 home win over the Islanders on Oct. 6, has goals in four straight games. His career high in goals was 28 in 2023-24.
BLACKHAWKS 5, PENGUINS 3
CHICAGO — Teuvo Teravainen and Roman Kantserov scored two goals apiece, and the Chicago Blackhawks topped the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 on Tuesday night in Connor Bedard's first game of the season.
Spencer Knight made 24 saves as Chicago improved to 1-1 on a seven-game homestand. Patrick Kane picked up his 894th career assist, matching Phil Housley for the most by a U.S.-born player in NHL history.
Bedard also had an assist. The captain had surgery on his left shoulder on July 8.
Sidney Crosby scored his first two goals of the season for Pittsburgh in the opener of a four-game trip. Nick Robertson also scored, and Sergei Murashov made 15 stops.
Crosby tied it at 3-all when he swept in a rebound with 10:43 left. It was his 656th career goal, tying Brendan Shanahan for 14th on the NHL list.
But Teravainen scored from a tough angle with 4:18 remaining, and Tyler Bertuzzi closed it out with an empty-netter in the final seconds.

SALT LAKE CITY — Dylan Guenther and Mikhail Sergachev each had a goal and an assist in the second period to help the Utah Mammoth beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 on Tuesday night.
Daniil But, Vincent Trocheck, and MacKenzie Weegar also scored for Utah, and Karel Vejmelka made 22 saves.

Vejmelka made key saves during a final-minute penalty kill to keep Toronto from forcing overtime.
CANADIENS 4, SABRES 3 (SO)
MONTREAL — Zachary Bolduc scored the decisive goal in a shootout for the second straight game, and the Montreal Canadiens beat the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 after blowing a two-goal lead Tuesday night.
Lane Hutson and Cole Caufield each had a goal and an assist for Montreal. Josh Anderson also scored, and Juraj Slafkovsky added two assists.
Jacob Fowler made 14 saves in his third consecutive start after stopping 30 shots in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Detroit, which was decided by Bolduc's goal in the sixth shootout round.
Olen Zellweger had two goals and Josh Norris also scored for Buffalo as the teams met for the first time since the Canadiens eliminated the Sabres in the second round of last season's playoffs.
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 35 shots, and Beck Malenstyn and Mattias Samuelsson had two assists apiece.
The Sabres scored twice in 61 seconds to erase a two-goal lead and tie the score at 3-3 at 5:25 of the third period. Norris bounced a point shot off defenseman Adam Engstrom before Zellweger converted his second with a wrist shot through a crowd.
In the shootout, Cole Caufield and Alexandre Texier scored for Montreal. Tage Thompson scored for Buffalo, but Jack Quinn missed to open the door for Bolduc.
BLUES 7, SENATORS 2
OTTAWA — Pius Suter, Jake Neighbours and Mason McTavish each had a pair of goals Tuesday night to lead the St. Louis Blues to a 7-2 win over the Ottawa Senators.
Adam Jiricek also scored for the Blues (3-2-1), while Joel Hofer stopped 15 shots.
Claude Giroux and Fabian Zetterlund scored for the Senators (5-2-0). Samuel Ersson, making his second start for Ottawa, made 19 saves. He’s now 0-2.
Ottawa was playing the back half of a back-to-back coming off a 4-1 win against the New Jersey Devils on Monday. The loss halted the Senators three-game win streak.
The game marked the start of a three-game road trip for the Blues.
The Blues took a 4-1 lead midway through the third when Suter beat Ersson short side from a sharp angle. Neighbours scored his second off a snap shot, McTavish scored on the power play, and Jiricek scored his first career goal to round out the scoring.
Zetterlund added a late power-play goal to make it 7-2.
JETS 5, WILD 2
WINNIPEG — Cole Perfetti scored a pair of goals to lead the Winnipeg Jets to a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild at Canada Life Centre Tuesday night.
Perfetti opened the scoring with his fourth of the season just 1:50 into the game. He added his fifth of the campaign late in the second frame on the power play, converting a pass from Gabriel Vilardi in the slot.
Promoted to the top line with Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor, the trio combined for seven points against the Wild. Scheifele recorded a goal and added two assists for a three-point night, while Connor had a goal and assist.
Cole Koepke also scored for Winnipeg (4-1-1), which finished their three-game homestand 2-1.
Stuart Skinner made 19 saves and has yet to lose in regulation time this season, boasting a 3-0-1 record.
Kirill Kaprizov scored both goals for the Wild (4-2-1), who were playing in the second of back-to-back games after defeating the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday. Calvin Pickard stopped 20 shots.
Winnipeg went 1-for-2 on the power play, while Minnesota was 0-for-2.
ISLANDERS 3, CANUCKS 2
NEW YORK — Kyle Palmieri scored twice, Matias Maccelli added his first goal for New York and the Islanders beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 on Tuesday night.
Ilya Sorokin made 23 saves for the Islanders, who have alternated losses and wins over their first six games, with all three wins coming at UBS Arena.
Brock Boeser and Max Sasson scored for Vancouver, which has lost five straight since opening the season 2-1. Leevi Merilainen stopped 35 shots.
Maccelli assisted on Palmieri's goal at 5:38 of the third period, which snapped a 2-2 tie.
Signed as a free agent after playing for Toronto last season, Maccelli freed up space with a stutter-step move and beat Merilainen late in the first period to make it 2-0. Palmieri had opened the scoring 53 seconds earlier.
Boeser's power-play goal with 1:05 left in the second period tied the game at 2-all. It was the 80th of his career with the man advantage, fifth most in franchise history.
FLAMES 4, DUCKS 2
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Martin Pospisil scored the tiebreaking goal with 4:22 left, Yegor Sharangovich added an empty-netter with 1:22 remaining, and the Calgary Flames beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-2 on Tuesday night.
Adam Klapka and Aydar Suniev added goals, and Dustin Wolf stopped 22 of 24 shots as the Flames (1-5) won for the first time this NHL season. Beckett Sennecke and Leo Carlsson scored goals, and Lukas Dostal had 32 saves for the Ducks (4-2).
Pospisil’s decisive goal came after he took a pass from Suniev at the centre circle, skated down the left side, deked Anaheim defenders Tyson Hinds and Tristan Luneau by faking a shot and snapped the puck past Dostal’s short side for a 3-2 lead.
Anaheim gave up the game-tying goal just eight seconds after killing Calgary’s 5-on-3 advantage — with the help of Dostal’s four saves — for two minutes of the second.
As Sennecke (tripping) and Alex Killorn skated out of the penalty box, Flames winger Ryan Strome snuck a cross-ice pass from the outside the left circle to Suniev, who snapped a shot from the inside edge of the right circle past Dostal’s blocker for a 2-all tie at the 8:02 mark.
The Flames took a 1-0 lead 8:32 into the first when Maksim Tsyplakov intercepted a pass in the Anaheim slot and touched a pass back to Klapka, who beat Dostal.
But the Ducks tallied twice within a 1:56 span of the first for a 2-1 lead. Sennecke stole the puck at his own blue line and beat Wolf glove-side for a breakaway goal with 7:51 left, and Carlsson's shot from the right circle went over Wolf’s left shoulder for a power-play goal with 5:55 left.
OILERS 4, KINGS 1
LOS ANGELES — Connor McDavid had a goal and two assists in the dynamic first period of his four-point night, propelling the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-1 victory over the winless Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.
Vasily Podkolzin got his sixth and seventh goals of the season, Leon Draisaitl also scored and Devon Levi made 39 saves for the Oilers, who have won five straight and scored at least three goals in every game of their 5-0-1 start.
McDavid recorded at least three points in a period for the 33rd time in his 11-year career, doing it in the first period for the 10th time. The six-time Art Ross Trophy winner as the NHL's top scorer has a whopping 16 points already this season with five multi-point games.
Brandt Clarke scored for the Kings, who dropped to 0-3-2 to begin coach Peter Laviolette's first season despite outshooting the Oilers 40-16. The Kings are still adjusting to their new direction under Laviolette, who wants offensive aggression from a team that has played deliberate, defence-first hockey for nearly two decades.
Los Angeles and Philadelphia are the NHL's only winless teams.
Evan Bouchard had two assists for the Oilers, who are off to their strong start despite playing without injured Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
Edmonton opened the scoring when McDavid froze Cody Ceci and fed the puck low to the quick-wristed Draisaitl. One minute later, Podkolzin converted the rebound after McDavid blew past Mikey Anderson and blistered a shot off Darcy Kuemper.
After the Kings had pinned Edmonton in its own end for nearly two full shifts late in the first period, McDavid came off the bench, accepted Ty Emberson's pass at the blue line in stride and scored his fourth goal.
Kuemper was replaced by Anton Forsberg to start the second.
DEVILS 5, RED WINGS 4 (OT)
DETROIT — Jack Hughes scored on a breakaway off a slick pass from Jesper Bratt early in overtime, lifting the New Jersey Devils to a 5-4 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night.
New Jersey's Evan Rodrigues, Nico Hischier and Bratt scored tiebreaking goals and Anthony Mantha had a tying goal. Jake Allen stopped 22 shots for the Devils.
Alex DeBrincat had a pair of tying goals after Emmitt Finne and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard scored to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead.
Detroit's John Gibson made 32 saves, including a kick save that denied Arseny Gritsyuk on an odd-man rush late in regulation to send the game to overtime.
The Red Wings got off to a rough start, getting outshot 16-0 midway through the first period. New Jersey, though, didn't take full advantage as Rodrigues scored its only goal in the opening period.
Finne scored on Detroit's third shot with 1:25 left in the first period and Brandsegg-Nygard scored on the team's next shot early in the second period.
PANTHERS 7, BLUE JACKETS 3
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Brady Tkachuk had a natural hat trick in the second period, his brother Matthew Tkachuk matched a club record with five assists and the Florida Panthers rolled past the Columbus Blue Jackets 7-3 on Tuesday night to snap a two-game skid.
Carter Verhaeghe scored twice and Sam Reinhart added two goals and an assist, extending his point streak against Columbus to a franchise-record 12 games.
Matthew Tkachuk assisted on all three of his brother's goals and had an assist on Verhaeghe's goal in the second for the first four-assist period in Panthers history. He extended his points streak to six games.
Brady Tkachuk became the ninth Panthers player with three goals in a period. He also had four points in the second as the brothers became the third and fourth Florida players with a four-point period.
HURRICANES 4, CAPITALS 2
RALEIGH, N.C. — Andrei Svechnikov scored two goals, including the winner with 6:04 left in the third period, to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-2 win over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night.
Eric Robinson and Mark Jankowski also scored for the Hurricanes, who have won six straight. Goalie Pyotr Kochetkov made 20 saves and improved to 4-0-0 this season.
Boone Jenner and Justin Holl scored for Washington. Ryan Leonard added two assists and Logan Thompson stopped 31 shots.
Svechnikov beat Thompson with a backhander six seconds after Justin Sourdif went to the penalty box for tripping. The Hurricanes finished 1 for 5 on the power play.
It was the last scheduled visit to Raleigh for Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, who received a standing ovation early in the first period.
The Lenovo Center has been a home away from home for the 41-year-old Russian, who is set to retire after this season. He was the No. 1 pick in the 2004 NHL draft held in Raleigh and his 59 career points in 49 regular-season games are the most he has recorded at any NHL venue other than Capital One Arena in Washington.
The Hurricanes, who were without captain Jordan Staal, were able to keep Ovechkin in check on Tuesday but Jenner remained hot. One of Washington’s top free-agent signings in the offseason, Jenner has scored in three straight games. He gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead at 9:26 in the first period.
KRAKEN 3, FLYERS 2 (SO)
PHILADELPHIA — Bobby McMann scored a goal in regulation and then added the game-winner in the fifth round of the shootout as the Seattle Kraken beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 on Tuesday night.
The loss extended Philadelphia's franchise record for a winless streak to start a season to eight games (0-5-3).
McMann scored his third goal of the season on the power play in the first period when a loose puck bounced to him in the right circle, and he snapped a shot past Philadelphia goalie Dan Vladar. He later beat Vladar in the shootout after Vladar made several nice stops to keep the Flyers' hopes alive.
Ville Ottavainen scored his first NHL goal at 8:54 of the second period after the Flyers got caught with tired players on the ice following an icing call on defenseman David Jiricek.
Philipp Grubauer made 24 saves to earn the win for Seattle, which has won three straight road games.
Grubauer got into it with Flyers forward Trevor Zegras on two successive plays in the second period. Zegras slashed Grubauer, and Grubauer responded with a cross-check. After Zegras came out of the box, Grubauer threw a puck at him; Zegras shot it back at him after the whistle, and they got into a skirmish again, and both were penalized.
Zegras beat Grubauer with a third-period goal as the Flyers evened the score with two goals. Grubauer got the better of Zegras, though, stoning him in the shootout.
Christian Dvorak also scored for Philadelphia and Vladar made 29 saves in defeat.
AVALANCHE 3, STARS 2
DALLAS — Martin Necas scored two goals, including a 5-on-3 score, and the short-handed Colorado Avalanche beat the Dallas Stars 3-2 on Tuesday night in the opener of a home-and-home series.
Artturi Lehkonen also scored for the Avalanche, while Mackenzie Blackwood made 24 saves after allowing five goals on Saturday against Toronto. Nathan MacKinnon had two assists, giving him 12 points.
The Avalanche opened with 11 forwards and six defensemen when forward Zachary L’Heureux was a late scratch with an upper-body injury. Colorado then played almost 17 minutes with 10 forwards when Fedor Svechkov drew a two-minute instigator penalty, five minutes for fighting and 10 more for misconduct. MacKinnon was also off the bench for more than seven minutes in the second after he fought Roope Hintz — who had his first NHL fight — and went to the locker room for facial repairs.
Tyler Seguin had a goal and an assist, and Hintz also scored for the Stars. Jake Oettinger stopped 22 shots after allowing three goals in his previous four games, and Miro Heiskanen had two assists.
GOLDEN KNIGHTS 5, PREDATORS 2
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — William Karlsson scored for the second straight game to put Vegas ahead, and the Golden Knights beat the Nashville Predators 5-2 on Tuesday night.
Playing a night after losing 4-2 at Minnesota to stop a four-game skid, the Golden Knights (6-2) improved to 3-1 on the road this season.
Jack Eichel, Tomas Hertl, Trevor Connelly and Brett Howden also scored for Vegas, and Adin Hill made 25 saves.
Hill stopped a penalty shot from Jack Drury in the first period after Nic Dowd was penalized for holding on a breakaway.
Adam Edstrom had his first career short-handed goal and Ryan O’Reilly also scored for the Predators, who lost in regulation for the first time since their season opener against the Wild. Juuse Saros stopped 20 shots.
At 8:45 of the second, Edstrom had a breakaway with Nashville a man down but initially couldn't get a shot off with Eichel in pursuit. But he maintained control of the puck behind the net and guided it past Hill to tie the game at 2-all.
Karlsson restored the Golden Knights' lead at 17:44 of the second with a snap shot to the top corner of the net, and goals by Connelly and Howden about 1 1/2 minutes apart in the third gave Vegas a three-goal advantage.
BRUINS 6, SHARKS 3
SAN JOSE, Calif. — Charlie McAvoy scored in his season debut after serving a six-game suspension and the Boston Bruins beat the San Jose Sharks 6-3 on Tuesday night.
McAvoy missed the first six games of the season as punishment for slashing Buffalo’s Zach Benson late in Game 6 of the first round of the playoffs last season when the Bruins got eliminated.
He didn't take long to make an impact as he got in front of the crease and knocked in a pass from JJ Peterka late in the first period to give Boston a 2-1 lead.
Fraser Minten scored two goals and Matthew Poitras and Pavel Zacha also scored for the Bruins, who have won three straight games. Will Borgen added an empty-net goal.
Jeremy Swayman made 35 saves.
Ivar Stenberg scored his first career goal for San Jose. Macklin Celebrini and Jacob Trouba also scored for the Sharks. Yaroslav Askarov made 20 saves.
