The Edmonton Oilers' blue line made some history on Monday.
With four goals to defencemen in just 3:49 against the Anaheim Ducks, the Oilers became the fastest team in NHL history to accomplish the feat, per Sportsnet's Mark Spector.
The goals fest began when Spencer Stastney scored his first as an Oiler at 4:36 of the second period. Not two minutes later, Mattias Ekholm scored his first of two on the evening, Darnell Nurse potted one unassisted just over a minute after that, then Ekholm rounded out the historic stretch by capitalizing on a Ducks turnover to beat Ville Husso.
Ekholm would score an empty-net goal in the dying seconds of the third period to complete his first career hat trick.
The Swede is the second Oilers defenceman to record a hat trick in as many games, with Evan Bouchard potting his own on Saturday against the Washington Capitals. The pair is the first duo of defencemen to record hat tricks in back-to-back games in NHL history.
Prior to Monday, the Oilers had 29 goals from their blue line
Though the Ducks made it interesting late in the third period, the Oilers scored two empty-netters to defeat their division rivals in regulation, gaining some crucial ground in a tight Pacific Division race.
