The Edmonton Oilers' loss to the Florida Panthers in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Monday proved especially costly for one player in particular.
Jake Walman has been fined for two separate incidents from the 6-1 rout, the NHL player safety department announced on Tuesday.
The first of two $5,000 fines was for roughing Florida's Matthew Tkachuk, while the second was for unsportsmanlike conduct pertaining to an incident with the Panthers bench.
Both fines were the maximum allowable under the CBA.
Walman's first offense was the unsportsmanlike incident — seen spraying water toward Florida's bench late in the second period. The defenceman's actions were seemingly in response to A.J. Greer, who moments earlier took Walman's glove off his hand during a momentary collision and then tossed it into the benches.
When asked about the incident post-game, Walman kept his explanation brief.
"I obviously did that for a reason," he explained. "Won't go into the details, just gamesmanship, I guess. Just gotta there's cameras everywhere."
Meanwhile, the second incident took place with just over five minutes left in the third period when Walman was assessed multiple penalties for a scuffle involving Tkachuk. The Panthers forward was wrapped up by Oilers' defenceman John Klingberg in front of Edmonton's net when Walman poked Tkachuk with his stick and followed up with a couple of punches.
Walman received a minor for unsportsmanlike conduct and a double-minor for roughing. Meanwhile, Panthers' Aaron Ekblad also received a double-minor on the play as he intervened towards the end of the skirmish and got into it with Walman as well.
Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final takes place between the Oilers and Panthers, who hold a 2-1 series lead, on Thursday. Catch all the action on Sportsnet or Sportsnet+ at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
