A roster spot is available in Florida after the Panthers waived forward Noah Gregor on Friday.
With Gregor off the active roster, there could be room for an injured forward like Matthew Tkachuk to return in time for Saturday's contest against the Ottawa Senators (Sportsnet, Sportsnet+, 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT).
Gregor, 27, has one goal and two assists in 24 games on the season, his first in Florida.
Meanwhile, the slumping New Jersey Devils also made a move, waiving defenceman Dennis Cholowski.
Cholowski, also 27, has one assist in 15 games this season.
The Devils have lost three straight games and seven of their last eight to fall out of the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference.
New Jersey returns to action Sunday against the Winnipeg Jets, who are sporting an 11-game losing streak of their own.
