Peter Maher, a legendary radio voice of the Calgary Flames, has passed away at the age of 79.
The team announced his death on Thursday.
Maher became the first-ever radio voice of the Flames in 1980 when the team moved to Calgary from Atlanta, then called the team for 33 straight seasons until his retirement following 2013-14.
He was the voice of the Flames during their only Stanley Cup championship in 1989, as well as their run to the Cup Final in 2004.
Maher's trademark calls of “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” became a staple for Calgary hockey fans over the years.
Maher was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006 after receiving the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award that year for his outstanding work as an NHL broadcaster.
Following his retirement, he was honoured with the Peter Maher Radio Broadcast Booth in the Scotiabank Saddledome. The Flames also named an award after him, giving out the Peter Maher Award to the Flames player who best demonstrated the virtues he upheld: Sincerity, integrity, dedication and respect.
Maher was born in Campbellton, N.B., on Nov. 11, 1946.
