General manager David Poile said Thursday he has offered the pending unrestricted free agent an eight-year contract.
Negotiations are still ongoing and the two sides have just under three weeks to get a deal done. Forsberg just wrapped up the final season of a six-year, $36 million contract and is eligible for free agency on July 13.
"We're still talking, still talking a lot, we just don't have it done," Poile said. "We've got a deadline coming up here in July, July 13, so I wish it was done. I said that two months ago. ...
"It's disappointing. I'm sure they're disappointed because they feel we should be offering something different. We feel that we're in a good spot. We've just got to keep working to get this done."
Forsberg set career highs this past season registering 42 goals and 42 assists for 84 points in 69 games.
Drafted 11th overall by Washington in 2012, Forsberg never played a game for the Capitals as he was traded the following year to the Predators in a deadline deal for Martin Erat and Michael Latta.
The 27-year-old from Ostervala, Sweden, has 220 goals and 469 points over 10 seasons with Nashville.
