The Detroit Red Wings have locked up a depth player on their blue line.
The team announced on Wednesday that it had agreed to a two-year, $3.2-million contract extension with defenceman Jacob Bernard-Docker.
Bernard-Docker, 25, began the season rotating with Travis Hamonic as the sixth defenceman but has slowly earned more trust from coaches as the season has moved along.
He is plus-five with four assists in 55 games this season, while averaging 15 minutes of ice time per game.
The signing and an earlier extension to Ben Chiarot mean the Red Wings are poised to bring back nearly their full defence corps next season. Simon Edvinsson still needs a new deal as a pending restricted free agent, but Hamonic is now the only UFA likely to depart the club in the summer.
