The Buffalo Sabres replaced Luukkonen with Alex Lyon to start the third period of Game 5 against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday.
Luukkonen exited with the Sabres down 5-3. Montreal went on to win 6-3 to take a 3-2 lead in the series.
The Finnish goalie was strong in a 3-2 win in Game 4, but then gave up five goals on 23 shots in Game 5 of the second-round series.
Luukkonen opened the playoffs as Buffalo's starter, but was replaced by Lyon in the third period of Game 2 of the first round against the Boston Bruins.
