The Buffalo Sabres have signed forward Casey Mittelstadt to a three-year, $7.5-million contract, the team announced Thursday.

Mittelstadt, who was a 10.2(c) restricted free agent, will carry a $2.5-million salary cap hit on his new deal.

The 22-year-old had the most productive season of his NHL career in 2020-21, putting up 22 points in 41 games for the lowly Sabres.

Mittelstadt, the eighth-overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, came into the NHL with significant hype, but struggled to become the star many expected during his first few seasons and was sent down to the AHL to rediscover his game in 2019-20.
