Two Ottawa Senators players are paying the price for their actions in a heated pre-season game against the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday.
Nick Cousins was fined $2,148.44 for slashing Montreal's Ivan Demidov, while Hayden Hodgson was fined $2,018.23 for boarding Alex Newhook, the NHL's Department of Player Safety announced Wednesday. Both fines were the maximum allowable under the CBA.
The fines come one day after the two Atlantic Division rivals combined for 150 penalty minutes in a fight-filled 5-0 victory for the Canadiens.
Cousins was penalized for slashing Demidov and was later given a misconduct. Demidov left the game and did not return.
There isn't believed to be any long-term injury concern for Demidov, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported Wednesday.
The two teams won't have much time to simmer down before they see each other again, as the Canadiens host the Senators on Saturday to close out the pre-season. The first regular-season meeting between the two rivals won't come until Nov. 1.
