The Ottawa Senators will be without their captain for the foreseeable future — but also got a dash of good news.
Newly extended head coach Travis Green told reporters on Monday that forward Thomas Chabot was "going to be out, probably ... a week to two weeks," with an upper-body injury.
Chabot left Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers with the injury and was seen shaking his hand in the penalty box during the first period before exiting. He was a minus-1 with one shot on goal in 12:03 of ice time through the first two periods.
While it's unclear when exactly the injury occurred, Green did reveal that Chabot had been playing banged-up before Saturday.
"He played a game with (the injury) ... it might have been the game before the last one," Green said. "It happened early, finished the game, and then he thought he would be fine, but couldn't go."
Chabot was named the 11th captain in Senators history ahead of the season (and became the first francophone to wear the "C" in Ottawa), replacing Brady Tkachuk, who was traded to the Florida Panthers.
The 30-year-old had posted one goal and three assists for a plus-5 through nine games before injury.
The good news for the Senators is that defenceman Jake Sanderson said he'll be back in the lineup in time for Brady Tkachuk's return to Ottawa on Wednesday.
Sanderson told reporters he "might have come back a little too early the first time, and that’s on me," adding, "You live and you learn from your mistakes."
Sanderson last played in Ottawa's season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs, suffering a lower-body injury after logging just 4:29 of ice time.
