Laurent Brossoit's expected debut in net for the San Jose Sharks against the Ottawa Senators on Sunday will be meaningful in more ways than one.
Not only will it be his first appearance with San Jose since the team acquired the goaltender in January, but it'll be his first NHL start in nearly two full years.
The 32-year-old last started between the pipes on April 18, 2024, when he was still a member of the Vegas Golden Knights. But with an injury to Sharks netminder Yaroslav Askarov, Brossoit was called up for a chance to prove himself at the NHL level once more.
Broissot missed the entire 2024-25 NHL season due to knee and hip ailments. He previously had hip surgery in 2022 and has undergone multiple knee procedures along the way as well.
Since then, however, the former sixth-rounder has been able to remain healthy and has been a consistent producer for the AHL's San Jose Barracuda, going 11-2-1 with a .915 save percentage and 2.48 goals-against average.
Broissot, a native of Port Alberni, B.C., has 140 games of NHL experience with the Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets and Golden Knights. He was also a member of the Chicago Blackhawks — signing as a free agent in 2024 — but did not suit up. Over his 10-year NHL career, Broissot holds a .911 save percentage and 2.64 goals-against average.
He was also a member of the 2022-23 Golden Knights squad that won the Stanley Cup, making eight starts as part of a 5-2-0 showing.
