The San Jose Sharks placed defenceman Leon Gawanke on waivers Thursday to terminate his contract, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman has learned.
Gawanke has yet to play in the NHL and has 27 points (eight goals and 19 assists) in 38 games with the Sharks' AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda.
He earned a silver medal with Team Germany during last year's world hockey championship.
The 24-year-old from Berlin was drafted in the fifth round, 136th overall, by the Winnipeg Jets in 2017.
After four seasons with the Manitoba Moose of the AHL, the Jets traded Gawanke to the Sharks last summer for defenceman Artemi Kniazev.
