The San Jose Sharks signed goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen to a two-year contract on Monday.

The Helsinki, Finland, native will earn $2.75 million per season.

“Kaapo has shown potential to be a number one goaltender in the NHL, and impressed us when he joined our team in the last part of the season,” said Sharks GM Mike Grier in a statement. “We are excited to have him with us.”

The Sharks acquired the netminder, along with a 2022 fifth-round pick, in a deadline day trade with the Dallas Stars. San Jose had sent Jacob Middleton to the Star as part of the deal.

The 25-year-old held a 14-14-4 record with a 2.87 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage during the past season split between Dallas and San Jose.
