The San Jose Sharks have signed goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood to a two-year, $4.7-million contract, the team announced Saturday. The pact carries a $2.35-million cap hit in 2023-24 and 2024-25.
The crease has been a major area of need for the Sharks. San Jose split starts between James Reimer and Kaapo Kahkonen in 2023-24.
The signing comes just a few days after the Sharks acquired him from the New Jersey Devils, whose own blue paint saw some turnover this year with Vitek Vanecek taking over the starter's role followed by the emergence of Akira Schmid.
“Mackenzie is a big, athletic goaltender with a lot of potential and upside,” Sharks general manager Mike Grier said in the team's press release. “He will be a good addition to our goaltender group.”
Blackwood, 26, registered a 10-6-2 record with a 3.20 goals-against average and .893 save percentage in limited action with the Devils in 2022-23.
