Stanley Cup odds: Panthers gain ground on Avalanche after deadline

Caroline Cameron, Jamal Mayers, PJ Stock, and Colby Armstrong are in the Players Lounge to look at who the odds-on favourites are to win the Stanley Cup before giving their opinion on who the top contenders are following the trade deadline.

We’re now several days removed from an eventful 2022 NHL trade deadline and the Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panthers are the odds-on favourites to hoist the Stanley Cup this season.

Colorado, tops in the Central Division and the Presidents’ Trophy frontrunner, added forward depth in the form of Artturi Lehkonen and Andrew Cogliano, and they acquired Josh Manson to bolster their blue-line.

Florida, meanwhile, made a huge splash by adding former Flyers captain Claude Giroux plus Ben Chiarot and Robert Hagg.

Colorado had the shortest Stanley Cup odds at the beginning of March yet despite adding those reinforcements had their odds drop slightly, while the addition of Giroux clearly had an impact on Florida’s odds.

Even after Aaron Ekblad's injury, the Panthers have leapfrogged state rival Tampa Bay and are currently the odds-on favourites to emerge from the Eastern Conference.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the latest post-trade deadline betting odds.

UPDATED 2022 STANLEY CUP ODDS
Colorado Avalanche +425 (pre-deadline odds +400)
Florida Panthers +550 (pre-deadline odds +800)
Tampa Bay Lightning +800 (pre-deadline odds +500)
Calgary Flames +900 (pre-deadline odds +1400)
Carolina Hurricanes +1000 (pre-deadline odds +1200)
Toronto Maple Leafs +1200 (pre-deadline odds +1000)

If you’re a fan of what the Lightning did by adding Brandon Hagel and Nick Paul then you’ll be happy to see Tampa’s odds change from what they were at the start of the month. No team has won three consecutive Stanley Cup championships since the Islanders dynasty of the early 1980s, but Tampa has the chance to do it.

Calgary has the best odds of any Canadian team. They traded for Tyler Toffoli in mid-February and gave up three draft picks to acquire Calle Jarnkrok in the hopes of making a lengthy playoff run.

Carolina added Max Domi, and Toronto won its first game with newly acquired defenceman Mark Giordano in the lineup.

Vegas Golden Knights +1300 (pre-deadline odds +1000)
Boston Bruins +1600 (pre-deadline odds +2200)
Pittsburgh Penguins +1600 (pre-deadline odds +1600)
New York Rangers +1800 (pre-deadline odds +2000)
Minnesota Wild +2200 (pre-deadline odds +1900)
St. Louis Blues +2500 (pre-deadline odds +2500)
Washington Capitals +3000 (pre-deadline odds +3000)
Edmonton Oilers +3000 (pre-deadline odds +3000)
Dallas Stars +4000 (pre-deadline odds +5000)
Nashville Predators +4500 (pre-deadline odds +4500)
Los Angeles Kings +5000 (pre-deadline odds +6000)

Many teams in the group above saw their odds remain relatively stagnant. The Bruins improved both short- and long-term by adding Hampus Lindholm and that’s reflected in the odds.

One interesting thing to note here is seeing the Wild’s value boosted compared to roughly three weeks ago. Minnesota GM Bill Guerin received universal acclaim after pulling off a few notable moves, including adding reigning Vezina Trophy winner Marc-Andre Fleury.

Minnesota and St. Louis are in the same division as Colorado, which has an impact on their odds since their paths through the playoffs are presumably going to be difficult.

Vancouver Canucks +10000 (pre-deadline odds +20000)
Winnipeg Jets +13000 (pre-deadline odds +7000)
Anaheim Ducks +15000 (pre-deadline odds +8000)
New York Islanders +15000 (pre-deadline odds +10000)
San Jose Sharks +50000 (pre-deadline odds +40000)
Columbus Blue Jackets +100000 (pre-deadline odds +50000)
Detroit Red Wings +100000 (pre-deadline odds +40000)
Chicago Blackhawks +100000 (pre-deadline odds +100000)
Buffalo Sabres +100000 (pre-deadline odds +100000)
New Jersey Devils +100000 (pre-deadline odds +100000)
Philadelphia Flyers +100000 (pre-deadline odds +100000)
Ottawa Senators +100000 (pre-deadline odds +100000)
Seattle Kraken +100000 (pre-deadline odds +100000)
Arizona Coyotes +100000 (pre-deadline odds +100000)
Montreal Canadiens +100000 (pre-deadline odds +100000)

The teams above were longshots prior to the deadline and after many traded away significant assets — mostly in the form of rental pieces — they all have odds ranging from 100/1 to 1,000/1.

Winnipeg and Vancouver are the two teams in this group with the most realistic shot of sneaking into the playoffs.

Teams will be removed from the futures markets once mathematically eliminated from post-season contention.

Odds listed above via the DraftKings sportsbook on March 24 (pre-deadline odds in parentheses is what DraftKings had listed at the beginning of March).
