The Dallas Stars will be without their captain for the next month.
The team announced Thursday that Jamie Benn will undergo surgery for a collapsed lung, which he was diagnosed with during Tuesday's pre-season game against the Minnesota Wild.
According to the team, Benn is expected to make a full recovery and will be reevaluated in four weeks.
The 36-year-old winger recorded 49 points (16 goals and 33 assists) in 80 games last season. From Victoria, B.C., Benn is entering his 17th NHL season, all of which he has played for the Stars.
Benn has 956 points (399 goals and 557 assists) in 1,192 career games, along with 80 points (28 goals and 52 assists) in 120 playoff appearances.
He signed a one-year, $1 million deal with Dallas on June 26 for the 2025-26 season, with up to $3 million available in performance bonuses.
The Stars have topped 100 points in each of the past three regular seasons and reached the Western Conference Final each time.
