After 747 games and two Stanley Cup rings, Tyler Johnson is hanging up his skates.
Johnson announced on Monday that he will be retiring from his 13-season professional hockey career.
The five-foot-eight centreman entered the NHL undrafted at 22 years old. He signed his first contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2012 and made his NHL debut that season.
Johnson went on to help the Lightning to the 2015 Stanley Cup Final. Five years later, he won his first Stanley Cup with the Lightning during the 2019-20 season. He quickly followed that up with his second Stanley Cup the following year.
"In the Lightning organization, I found my place," Johnson said in a press release. "My teammates became brothers, and ... together we won back-to-back Stanley Cups, carving our names into history with our coaches and staff. Tampa will forever hold my heart."
In July 2017, the Spokane Wash. native signed a seven-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Johnson ranks eighth in Lightning franchise history with 161 goals.
Johnson dealt with injuries on and off from 2015 until 2024, which impacted his number of games played per season. He only cracked the 80-game mark twice over that stretch.
Johnson was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in July 2021, where he would play three seasons.
He signed a one-year deal with the Boston Bruins in November 2024, but after playing in only nine games, the sides agreed to mutually terminate his contract.
“I'm thrilled to focus on starting a fam,ily and exploring new paths" Johnson said. "This moment is bittersweet, but I leave the game with no regrets, only gratitude for the rinks, the teammates, the fans, and a sport that will always ignite my soul.
"Thank you all for being part of my journey."
