USA defenceman Charlie McAvoy will not play in Thursday's 4 Nations Face-Off final against Canada.
The Boston Bruins announced Tuesday that the defenceman was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital to undergo further testing on an upper-body injury on Monday, and was being evaluated by the team's Dr. Peter Asnis.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that McAvoy is sidelined with an infection related to the upper-body injury.
The 27-year-old McAvoy did not play in the team's 2-1 loss to Sweden in Monday's round-robin finale.
Head coach Mike Sullivan said at the time that McAvoy was out with an upper-body injury.
McAvoy's big hit on Connor McDavid on Saturday was seen as a momentum changer in the team's 3-1 win over Canada in group play to book a spot in the final.
In other injury news, ESPN's Emily Kaplan reported that both Matthew and Brady Tkachuk intend to play in the 4 Nations final. In Monday's game against Sweden — which was meaningless in the standings as both Canada and the USA had punched their ticket to the final — Matthew did not play and Brady was pulled early due to precautionary reasons.
Kaplan also reported that Team USA is searching for an injury replacement.
Canada clipped Finland 5-3 Monday to secure its spot.
Watch the 4 Nations Face-Off final live Thursday on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+, starting at 7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT.
