The Minnesota Wild have named former New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins executive Ray Shero senior advisor to general manager Bill Guerin, the team announced Wednesday.
Shero most recently served as executive vice-president and GM of the Devils, but was fired after a four-plus year run in New Jersey amid a disappointing 2019-20 season.
New Jersey made the post-season just once during his tenure (2017-18) and came into that year with high expectations after adding 2019 No. 1 overall pick Jack Hughes to a talented core that included 2017 top pick Nico Hischier, former MVP Taylor Hall and 2012-13 Norris winner P.K. Subban.
Head coach John Hynes was fired after a horrible start, Hall was later dealt to the Arizona Coyotes, and the Devils finished the year 26th in the standings.
Shero had significantly more success in Pittsburgh, where he also served as executive VP and GM, building the team around stars Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury and Kris Letang that would win the 2009 Stanley Cup. He was named General Manager of the Year after the 2012-13 season.
Guerin and Shero won the 2009 Cup together, after the latter acquired the veteran forward from the New York Islanders at the trade deadline. Guerin wrapped up his playing career after the following season.
Shero also spent time as assistant GM for the Ottawa Senators (1993-98) and Nashville Predators (1998-2006).
