The Colorado Avalanche acquired Washington Capitals centre Lars Eller in a trade on Wednesday.

The Capitals get a second-round pick in 2025 in return.

With the Capitals falling out of the playoff race, they have been in sell mode — allowing the reigning Stanley Cup champion Avalanche to pick up one of their veteran forwards.

Eller, 33, has a $3.5-million cap hit in the final year of his five-year deal this season. The Capitals will retain 31 per cent of Eller’s salary.

He can become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

The Danish forward has seven goals and nine assists 60 games this season.

In his 930-game career, Eller has 160 goals and 204 assists for 364 points with the St. Louis Blues, Montreal Canadiens and Capitals.

The Blues picked Eller 13th overall in the 2007 NHL Draft. He was traded to the Canadiens before entering the NHL in 2010.

Eller scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal in 2018 for the Capitals.
