It was reported back in November that DeBrusk was unhappy about his role with the Bruins as head coach Bruce Cassidy made him a healthy scratch at times last season, which led to his request to be traded.
The 25-year-old had signed a two-year, $8-million extension ahead of the NHL trade deadline. The winger saw a big bump in production after getting promoted to the top line in April, scoring seven goals and 12 points in 15 games while averaging 17:19 minutes per game.
DeBrusk scored 25 goals and 42 points in 77 games last season while adding two goals and four points in Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Bruins fired Cassidy in early June as the team said it was looking for a “new voice” as one of the deciding factors behind the decision. Jim Montgomery was hired by Boston as their new head coach on July 1.
Boston selected DeBrusk with the 14th overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.
