Canadiens trade defenceman Jeff Petry to Penguins

Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes speaks about the trade that sent Jeff Petry to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Mike Matheson, believes Matheson can be a great role model to young players.

The Montreal Canadiens traded defenceman Jeff Petry and forward Ryan Poehling to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday in exchange for defenceman Mike Matheson and a 2023 fourth-round pick.

Petry played eight seasons with the Canadiens after the Habs acquired the American blueliner in a trade deadline deal with the Edmonton Oilers.

The 34-year-old picked up eight goals and 21 assists in 68 games for the last-placed Canadiens in the 2021-22 season.

Poehling recorded 17 points with a minus-21 rating in 57 appearances for Montreal last season.

In return, the Canadiens receive a left-handed defender in Matheson, who tallied a career-high 31 points in 2021-22, and additional capital for next year’s draft.
