Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin day-to-day with lower-body injury

Both goaltenders were credited with shutouts, but it was Ilya Samsonov and the Capitals that prevailed 1-0 in a shootout against the Islanders.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is day-to-day with a lower-body injury, the team announced on Friday.

The exact nature of the injury or when Ovechkin suffered it is unclear. The 35-year-old did not play the final minutes of regulation or in overtime of Thursday night’s win over the New York Islanders and did not take an attempt in the shootout.

Ovechkin’s status is expected to be updated after the Capitals’ Saturday morning skate ahead of another game against the Islanders.

Ovechkin has 24 goals and 42 points in 43 games this season for the Capitals, who currently lead the tight East Division by a single point over the Pittsburgh Penguins and Islanders.
