New rule changes to be discussed at NHL GM meetings

On this edition of 32 thoughts, Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman discuss if there's clarity to come with the Canucks coaching staff, the central topics at this weeks GM meetings and what's next with Mitchell Miller's contract with Boston Bruins.

The coach’s challenge and video review for major penalties are topics to be discussed at the upcoming NHL general manager meetings on Tuesday, Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek reported Saturday night on the 32 Thoughts segment of Hockey Night in Canada.

“There’s a lot of people around the NHL that weren’t exactly thrilled that Trevor Zegras had a goal called back last week,” Marek said. “I know a lot of managers didn’t like it, I’m not sure they can do anything about it right now, but it will be part of a discussion.”

Zegras pulled off yet another lacrosse-style goal on Thursday against the Minnesota Wild, but the goal was called back after video review determined the play was offside.

Marek also reported that there will be an update on rule changes, namely the rule that allows the on-ice officials to review major penalties and rescind them if necessary.

The rule came into effect at the beginning of the 2022-23 season and was used Thursday when a major penalty assessed to Flyers forward Nic Deslauriers was rescinded upon video review.
