For Your Consideration: All-Star ballots fans should rally around

The Hockey Central recap the first batch of players from each conference to get selected to the 2024 ASG, before offering their individual lists on who they believe deserves to be voted into the mid-season competition.

The NHL now has 32 all-stars but 12 spots remain. That’s where you come in.

The league has opened up a fan vote for the final 12 spots (eight skaters and four goalies), and plenty of superstars are worthy of a trip to the festivities in Toronto.

If you’re still undecided on who to vote for, we’ve created a handy cheat sheet with some ballots you should consider.

And you can watch all of the all-star festivities from Feb. 1-3 on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.

Top Scorers

The first 32 players feature one star from each team, meaning a number of the league’s top scorers were left at home.

The easiest ballot to fill out, all you need to do is open up the scoring-leaders list and fill it in. For the goalies, the highest save percentage among regular starters will do the trick.

Editor’s Note: Rangers star Artemi Panarin is passing on this year’s event while he awaits the birth of his second child.

Canadian Team Stars

The stars have been shining especially bright north of the border this season.

From the West-leading Canucks and Jets to the always-contending Maple Leafs, plenty of big names are making their mark in the old North Division. So many, in fact, that a bunch of them were left off the initial all-star list because of the one-player-per-team restriction.

You can fix that with your votes.

Next Gen

If he doesn’t miss it because of injury, Connor Bedard is set to become the youngest player in NHL history to skate in an All-Star Game, but there are plenty of other youngsters worthy of recognition, too.

The two guys taken immediately after Bedard in the draft — Leo Carlsson and Adam Fantilli — have also made an instant impact. The third Hughes brother, Luke, has had no issues adjusting to the league. And Connor Zary has cemented his place in the lineup for the Flames.

Legend Row

One of the greatest moments in All-Star Game lore came in 1980, when a 51-year-old Gordie Howe played in his final game on the same night a 19-year-old Wayne Gretzky made his All-Star Game debut.

Could we see a moment like that at the 2024 game?

Of the already-selected all-stars, the ageless Sidney Crosby is by far the oldest skater of the group, at 36. And he’s earned the spot with 41 points through 37 games this season. But these future Hall of Famers deserve to join “Sid the Kid” in Toronto.

Editor’s Note: Alex Ovechkin reportedly asked the Capitals to not be included in this year’s event.

All Defence

They say defence wins championships but the initial list of all-stars somewhat surprisingly featured only two defencemen — Rasmus Dahlin and Quinn Hughes.

That means for now there are no Norris Trophy winners going to the All-Star Game.

You can help get more blueliners into the game by voting for this ballot, which features some Vezina-calibre goaltenders, too.
