‘Hockey at its best’: Flames-Rangers bout provides fans with performance to remember

Filip Chytil scored twice, but it was Alexis Lafreniere who had the game-winner as the New York Rangers prevailed over the Calgary Flames 5-4 in overtime.

What a night it was at Madison Square Garden.

The Calgary Flames and New York Rangers battled it out (literally) on Monday under the shining lights of the historic venue.

Hockey fans were treated to big hits, spirited tilts, dazzling goals, and a whole lot of passion in this Broadway classic.

In the back-and-forth affair, the Rangers came out victorious courtesy of Alexis Lafreniere, who potted a rebound in overtime to beat Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom and cap the 5-4 win.

Yet, that was far from the only highlight in this contest with a certain Rangers blueliner making waves more than once.

Here’s a peek at some of the best action and reactions.

Things really started heating up with six minutes remaining in the opening frame when Rangers defenceman Jacob Trouba delivered a big hit on the Flames’ Dillon Dube, leading to a fight with Calgary defenceman Chris Tanev.

Alas, Trouba wasn’t finished quite yet.

At the tail end of the second period, as Nazem Kadri entered the Rangers’ zone, the Rangers captain delivered a hit that sent tremors down the East Coast, and fans and media alike took notice.

And finally, to add the finishing touches on the spectacle that was put forth, Lafreniere beat Markstrom in the extra frame.
