Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jake Muzzin has a broken bone in his face and will miss Monday’s game against the Calgary Flames, while forwards Zach Hyman and Joe Thornton will also be sidelined and are considered day-to-day.

It is unclear how long the veteran D-man will be absent, but the plan is for him to return with a full face shield.

Muzzin took a stick to the face on the follow-through after a shot from Tyler Toffoli in the third period of the Leafs’ 5-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.

Muzzin has 12 points in 19 games for the Leafs.

Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe didn’t reveal who will take Thornton’s spot on the top line alongside the red-hot Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner. Thorton has seven points in four games since returning from a nearly month-long absence due to a rib injury. He has nine points in nine games on the season.

Hyman, meanwhile, has 10 points in 18 games this season.
