The NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced Wednesday that Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman Mikhail Sergachev has been fined $5,000 for slashing Toronto Maple Leafs forward Michael Bunting.

The amount was the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Sergachev slashed Bunting during the final seconds of the first period in the Maple Leafs’ 4-1 win over the Lightning on Tuesday night.

No penalty was called on the play.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Lightning.
