The separation comes almost one year to the day since Vonn shared a touching photo of her asking Subban to marry her.
“Over the past three years PK and I have had some incredible times together,” Vonn wrote, captioning a photo of the couple. “He is a kind, good man, and someone I respect a great deal. However, after much consideration we have decided to move forward separately. We will always remain friends and love each other immensely. We ask that you please respect our privacy during this time.”
Subban, sharing a post that echoed Vonn’s sentiments, said in part: “Lindsey is one of the most kind and caring people I know. I will always treasure our time as a couple together and the many laughs we shared.”
Vonn, an Olympic gold medalist whose storied skiing career saw her become the all-time leader in women’s World Cup race victories before her retirement in 2019, and Subban, a three-time all-star defenceman for the New Jersey Devils, met at the 2017 ESPYS. They began dating in 2018, after Vonn returned from the Pyeongchang Olympics.
Subban initially proposed to Vonn in August of 2019, according to Vogue. Last December, Vonn doubled down on their engagement by proposing to Subban herself, saying at the time that “Men should get engagement rings too.”
In October of this year, Vonn told PEOPLE magazine that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic had delayed their wedding planning.
