The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced the sudden passing of defenceman Mark Giordano‘s father, Paul Giordano, on Thursday evening.

Born in Toronto, Mark Giordano was traded to the Maple Leafs in 2022 from the Seattle Kraken and has played for his hometown team since.

Giordano played for the Calgary Flames for the first 15 years of his professional career, serving as captain for eight years before joining Seattle in the expansion draft. The Flames released a statement on Giordano’s father shortly after his death was announced.

“Our deepest condolences go out to Mark and the entire Giordano family,” the team said on X, formerly Twitter. “Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this incredibly difficult time.”

Paul Giordano worked in real estate, and is survived by his wife Anna, Mark and daughter Michelle.
