Maple Leafs goalie Joseph Woll makes return to first full practice since injury

Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe gives the latest update on goaltender Joseph Woll's injury recovery, says getting back on the ice for practice was an important step for him, and we'll now see how he responds in the coming days.

Lost in the fallout from Saturday’s Battle of Ontario was the presence of the second goalie at Monday’s Maple Leafs skate.

That would be Joseph Woll.

The 25-year-old has not played since Dec. 7, when he suffered a high-ankle sprain. He had an 8-5-1 record, 2.80 GAA and .916 save percentage in 15 games this season when he went down.

“Today was an important step,” said head coach Sheldon Keefe, “just to have more reps and his own net.”

Keefe said Woll’s return was accommodated by giving current backup, Martin Jones, some time to work out prior to the team practice. The head coach added that he had not had a chance to check in with Woll about how things felt, but “it looks like he got through it well.”

Woll’s return to duty remains unknown, though Keefe said last week the American netminder was “not close.”
