Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll out week-to-week with high ankle sprain

Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe talks to the media about Joseph Woll's high ankle sprain, saying it's a tough blow for their team and there isn't a set timeline for his return.

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll will be sidelined week-to-week with a high ankle sprain, the team announced Saturday.

This is not the first time Woll has dealt with an ankle injury, Sportsnet’s Luke Fox reports. During his recovery from shoulder surgery in 2022, Woll also suffered an ankle injury that delayed the start to his season.

Woll exited midway through the third period of Thursday’s game against the Ottawa Senators with an injury after making a save on Rourke Chartier. Woll was in obvious pain, requiring assistance to leave the ice, and was unable to put weight on his left leg.

The 25-year-old made 29 saves in the game, including numerous game-saving stops.

“It’s unfortunate, right?” Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said after the game.

“He’s been playing so well, and he’s building such great momentum here on his season and his career. It’s a setback here. Now he’s going to miss time, for sure. We’ll determine the extent of it once we get home. But, obviously, he’s the big reason why we get two points here tonight.”

Woll was making his fifth consecutive start of the season earning more playing time after putting up a 8-5-1 record with a 2.80 goals-against average and .916 save percentage in 15 appearances.

The Leafs will turn to Ilya Samsonov and Martin Jones during Woll’s absence. Jones appeared in relief of Woll with Samsonov unable to dress due to an illness.
