Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jordie Benn will be placed on the injured reserve list with an upper-body injury, head coach Sheldon Keefe announced Thursday.

Though the exact extent of the injury is yet to be determined, the team is considering Benn week-to-week, Keefe added.

Benn exited early from the Maple Leafs’ win over the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night.

The 35-year-old left the Maple Leafs bench partway through the second period after he appeared to be labouring around the ice.

Benn did return to start the third period, however, but after playing just two shifts he returned to the room. Benn logged just 9:36 total ice time in the game.

Already missing their three highest-paid defencemen, the Maple Leafs will now be without another blueliner for at least a week.
