Maple Leafs’ Reaves on Marchand: ‘He likes telling me he makes a lot more than I do’

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ryan Reaves discusses Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand and the challenge the Stanley Cup champion presents, before recalling some of Marchand's trash talk, which the left winger responded to promptly.

It wouldn’t be a game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins without some pre-game antics.

On Saturday, it was the usual suspects who provided the juicy sound bites.

Maple Leafs enforcer Ryan Reaves was asked about the matchup with Bruins captain Brad Marchand, where he revealed Marchand’s favourite line to use when the two trash talk.

“He likes telling me he makes a lot more than I do,” Reaves said with a laugh. “Doesn’t really bother me. A lot of players make a lot more than I do.”

Asked about what the strategy for playing Marchand should be, Reaves said it’s on the Maple Leafs to be smart.

“He’s not a guy that’s going to drop his gloves,” Reaves said. “He’ll try and bait you in and make you take something stupid. And their power play is dangerous and I think that is where he thrives.”

Marchand was asked about Reaves’ comments and thinks the Maple Leafs forward may be living in the past.

“I think I said that once a long time ago,” Marchand said. “Sounds like he’s holding on to it.”

Reaves is expected to return to the Maple Leafs’ lineup for Saturday’s Original Six six clash. He last played in Tuesday’s win over the Florida Panthers where he was a plus-1 in 7:15 of ice time.
