Things appear to be moving forward between the NHL and its players’ association on plans for holding another World Cup of Hockey.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman provided a brief update on the situation during Saturday’s 32 Thoughts segment on Hockey Night in Canada.
“They’re talking about February 2024, a best-on-best, which we think (we) all want to see as hockey fans,” Friedman said. “The next meeting on this is expected to be this week between the league and the players’ association.”
NHL players were expected to compete in Beijing at the Winter Olympic Games for the first time since 2014. The league decided to pull out Dec. 22 due to COVID-related disruptions and has used the Olympic break to reschedule games that had been postponed.
The World Cup of Hockey was most recently held in Toronto in September 2016 and featured eight teams: host Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden, United States, plus Team Europe (composed of players from European nations not represented) and Team North America (Canadian and American players 23 years old or younger).
Canada defeated Europe 3-1 and 2-1 to win the best-of-three final and capture the World Cup.
