The Dallas Stars have locked up a key piece of their offence by signing centre Roope Hintz to an eight-year, $67.6-million contract extension.

The extension, worth an average annual value of $8.45 million, begins next year and runs through the 2030-31 season.

Hintz, 26, had a break out season offensively last season with 37 goals and 72 points and has continued to produce this year. In 22 games this season he has eight goals and 24 points, putting him tied for third in scoring on the team.

“Roope is a dynamic two-way centerman who has proven to be one of the best at his position in the NHL,” Stars general manager Jim Nill said. “He’s developed into one of our most versatile players, making an impact on special teams and at even strength, and can be counted on by our coaching staff in every situation.”

The Stars selected Hintz in the second round of the 2015 NHL Draft and he is in his fifth season with the club.
