Wild sign Andrew Hammond, lose Alex Stalock to upper-body injury

The Minnesota Wild added a goalie but lost another.

On Wednesday, the club announced it had signed free agent Andrew Hammond to a one-year, two-way contract worth $700,000 at the NHL level. At the same time, the Wild announced back-up Alex Stalock would be out indefinitely with an upper-body injury.

Hammond, 32, posted a 16-12-3 record and four shutouts with the AHL’s Rochester Americans last season. He has a 27-15-6 record in the NHL over parts of five seasons with the Senators and Avalanche and last played in the NHL in 2018.

The Wild had no further information on Stalock’s injury, including how long he would be unavailable.

The news is the latest in a string of goaltending changes for the Wild this off-season. In October, the club traded veteran goalie Devan Dubnyk to the San Jose Sharks and then signed free agent Cam Talbot to be the starter.

While Hammond could fill in for Stalock as backup, the injury also opens the door for 24-year-old Kaapo Kahkonen, last season’s AHL goaltender of the year.
