The OHL is strengthening its feeder system.
A first-of-its-kind development league will be established beginning this year between the OHL and what was formerly known as the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL), the sides announced on Thursday.
The GOJHL, previously an informal OHL pipeline, will begin a phased transition to establishing itself as the first proper development league this season. It will also drop the word "junior" from its name, rebranding as the GOHL.
"The GOHL has always been about player development, and now, as the official development league of the OHL, we’re raising that standard even higher," GOHL commissioner Craig Spada said in a statement released by the OHL.
"Our new identity reflects this partnership and shows players, fans, sponsors and the hockey community that we are fully committed to providing the best development system in the province. It’s about creating real advantages for our athletes as they take the next step in their careers."
The OHL saw a mass talent exodus over the past few months after eligibility changes allowed CHL players to compete in NCAA men's hockey.
GOJHL alumni include Joe Thornton, Mark Scheifele and Brandon Montour.
The league features 23 teams across Ontario that compete in a 50-game regular season ahead of the Sutherland Cup Finals.
The release stated the alignment with the OHL could introduce new opportunities for its players, including events tied to the Top Prospects Game.
