The Canadian men's hockey team's chances of advancing directly to the quarterfinals suffered a big blow when Finland rallied for a 4-3 overtime win over Sweden at the Beijing Olympics on Sunday.
Unbeaten Finland wins Group C with the victory, while Sweden picks up a point for the overtime loss and now has seven points. The result sends both teams to the quarterfinals.
The three pool winners and the best second-place team advance directly to the quarterfinals, while the other teams in the 12-squad event have to play in the sudden-death qualifying round.
Canada (1-1) can now no longer catch Sweden and is destined to finish second in Group B if it beats China on Sunday at 8:10 a.m. ET and the United States beats Germany.
In that scenario, Canada likely would have to face China again in the qualifying round.
Harri Pesonen scored the overtime winner for the Finns, who trailed 3-0 after 40 minutes.
Former Edmonton Oilers forwards Iiro Pakarinen, with two, and Teemu Hartikainen scored in regulation for Finland.
Lucas Wallmark, Lukas Bengtsson and Anton Lander, also a former Oiler, scored for Sweden.
The Russians also have advanced directly to the quarterfinals after winning Group B.
